Modern boats (motor and sail) are fitted out with many devices necessary for safe and comfortable operation of the boat. All these devices require electricity to operate.
Below are typical devices used on modern boats:
Internal cabin lights
Power sockets for search lights and accessories including mobile phone chargers
Navigational lights
Navigation instruments (log, depth meter, compass)
Satellite navigation system, GPS, laptop
Communication system
Entertainment system (radio, TV, CD and DVD players etc)
The above equipment can be powered from the on-board batteries installed on the boat. These batteries however, must be recharged. Almost every boat these days is equipped with a diesel or petrol driven outboard or inboard motor, so the generator attached to this motor can recharge the yacht’s batteries. Recharging with the use of yacht’s motor can be sometimes necessary because it offers a quick charge, independent of the sun and wind conditions. There are times however, when battery charging can be left to the sun. Solar -charging is quiet, clean, smell free and once installed it doesn’t cost anything!
